Bhubaneswar:2/11/26:: The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has announced strict guidelines for bursting firecrackers across the state ahead of Diwali. As per the new restrictions, people will be allowed to burst crackers for just two hours on Diwali.

According to the guidelines issued by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board, firecrackers can be burst only between 7 PM and 9 PM. The prescribed noise level must not exceed 125 decibels. The board has also prohibited bursting crackers near hospitals, educational institutions, courts, religious places, parks and gardens to protect public health and maintain peaceful surroundings.

Sale and Use of Non-Green Crackers Restricted

In a major step towards pollution control, restrictions have been imposed on the production and sale of firecrackers other than approved green crackers. The board has advised consumers to check the CSIR-NEERI green logo and QR code on the packaging before purchasing green crackers. People have also been urged to buy fireworks only from authorised sellers.

Firecracker Use Banned in Several Sensitive Areas

The guidelines prohibit bursting firecrackers near slums, shops, buildings, fire-prone locations, and roads witnessing heavy vehicular movement. The restrictions are intended to prevent accidental fires, safeguard public property and reduce inconvenience to residents.

The OSPCB has issued specific safety instructions for Diwali celebrations. Children below 10 years of age should not be allowed to burst noise-producing firecrackers. People have also been advised to wear cotton clothes while bursting crackers. Furthermore, the use of barium and other prohibited chemical substances in firecrackers has been completely banned.

The authorities have warned that anyone violating the prescribed guidelines will face legal consequences under the Odisha Fireworks and Loudspeaker Control Act, 1958, and the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.

The board has urged people to celebrate Diwali responsibly by following the prescribed timings, using only approved green crackers, and prioritising environmental protection and public safety.
