BMC & BDA have launched a pilot project to install climate-responsive traffic and parking-cum-commuter shelters

Bhubaneswar:21/7/26: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) have launched a pilot project to install climate-responsive traffic and parking-cum-commuter shelters along the Janpath corridor, aiming to improve commuter comfort while enhancing the city’s urban landscape. The initiative, launched under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), seeks to provide better public amenities and contribute to greener, more sustainable urban infrastructure while supporting efforts to improve air quality.

As part of the pilot project, modern traffic shelters are being constructed at Rupali Square and Power House Square, two of Bhubaneswar’s busiest intersections. In addition, four parking-cum-commuter shelters are being developed at strategically selected locations along the 5.8-km Smart Janpath corridor to serve pedestrians, commuters and motorists.BMC Commissioner and BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana said the shelters have been designed to combine functionality, aesthetics and sustainability.

One of the project’s standout features is the use of Flame Vine creepers over fabric canopies. As the plants grow, they will create a natural green cover that helps reduce heat absorption during the summer, making waiting areas cooler and more comfortable.

The shelters are also equipped with specially designed horizontal screening panels between support columns to block direct sunlight from multiple angles throughout the day, providing better protection from harsh weather.

The parking-cum-commuter shelters have been designed to protect both commuters and parked vehicles from rain and excessive heat. They will also function as convenient waiting spaces, particularly benefiting senior citizens, pregnant women and other vulnerable road users.

Officials said the project reflects the city’s commitment to climate-responsive urban planning and citizen-centric infrastructure. The initiative complements the ongoing beautification and landscaping of the Smart Janpath corridor, reinforcing Bhubaneswar’s vision of creating greener, pedestrian-friendly and sustainable public spaces.

If successful, the pilot project could pave the way for similar climate-responsive commuter infrastructure at other key locations across the city.
