SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO ORISSA’S FILM INDUSTRY

(1)     From the year 1950 to 1953 no Oriya Picture was produced in Orissa. After my sincere efforts a joint venture Oriya and Bengali was initiated

with the help of a Bengali Producer and with that joint venture the first social film ‘AMARI GAON ]HIA* {Oriya) and “PANRAKHA” in Bengali was produced in the year 1953.

In the year 1960 along with his friends formed a film-producing concern named “RUPARAGA PVT. LTD”, at Cuttack and produced the Oriya Picture “SHRE LOKANATH”. This is the first Oriya picture in Orissa which won the National Award – Silver Medal from the President of India.

The Govt. of Orissa assigned the undersigned to prepare the plan and project report of Orissa Film Studio with the producer of P.R. Department Govt. of Orissa. After being duly convinced and satisfied the Government decided to erect a Film Studio and the Foundation stone of the Orissa Film Studio was laid by Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, the then Chief Minister of Orissa in the year 1961.

The Orissa State is surrounded by four other states Bengal North, Andhra in the South, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar in the West, Bay of Bengal in the East hence the mar fort of Oriya Film in Orisswasis too limited, 1960 there were e only 56 houses running at Orissa and most of the border states refused to screen Oriya film then I started 12 touring and mobile cinema to reach the interior corner of Orissa to show only the Oriya Film and after all I achieved and new producers are coming to produce Oriya films. Now after the formation of a film development corporation more than 250 cinema houses running in the state.

Finding many difficulties one promoter of the Oriya Film makers delegation laid by me met the then C.M. Sri Biju Pattanaik and expressed our difficulties and hurdled. The C.M. Mr. Pattnaik at once declared Oriya Film Production will be included under Small Scale Industry and the notification on the above published in 1966. Except Orissa no other States in India or the Central Govt. has included film as an Industry.

(6) On his suggestion, EIMPA, Orissa Branch was opened at Cuttack in the year 1970 and during my Chairmanship, the EIMPA Orissa gave a proposal to the Govt. of Orissa to set up the Film Development Corporation. After much persuasion by the undersigned, the then Governor Mr. B.D. Jatti formed a Film Development corporation by way of ordinance.
