Bhubaneswar:7/4/26; In a significant achievement for urban governance, Odisha has emerged as the leading state in the implementation of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, setting new benchmarks in water supply and urban infrastructure development.
Launched in October 2021 and extended till March 2027, AMRUT 2.0 focuses on providing universal water supply coverage, rejuvenating water bodies, and building resilient urban infrastructure. In Odisha, the mission is being implemented across 89 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) with 345 projects approved at a total cost of Rs 4,030.18 crore.
The state has demonstrated exceptional execution capability, completing 99 projects while the remaining ones are advancing rapidly. Odisha has also achieved near-total utilisation of central funds, highlighting its efficient project management and financial discipline.
Key infrastructure milestones include the commissioning of seven Water Treatment Plants with a combined capacity of 43 Million Litres per Day (MLD), directly benefiting 2.83 lakh citizens. Additionally, 24×7 water supply systems have been made operational in major urban centres, and over 2.7 lakh household water connections have been provided. These interventions have collectively improved the lives of more than 5 lakh urban residents across the state.
Odisha has also effectively leveraged complementary schemes of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The state has earned incentives under “Pay Jal Survekshan” and “Jai Hi AMRUT” programmes for its outstanding performance in water management and reuse. Community participation has been strengthened through initiatives like “AMRUT Mitra” and “Women for Tree,” with women Self Help Groups actively involved in plantation drives and waterbody rejuvenation.
In a progressive move, the state has introduced innovative financing mechanisms under the “Credit Enhancement Initiative,” empowering smaller ULBs to undertake critical infrastructure projects and expand service delivery.
