CPI(M) Submits Memorandum to Odisha Governor Opposing MLAs Salary Hike

Bhubaneswar:15/12/25:CPI(M) leaders submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Odisha and demanded rejection of the Odisha Jan Pratinidhi (Amendment) Bill 2025, which proposes higher salaries, allowances, and pensions for legislators.

Firstly, the Odisha Legislative Assembly passed the Bill on December 9, 2025, along with amendments concerning the Speaker’s salary and allowances and the Ministers’ salary and allowances. Secondly, CPI(M) urged the Governor not to approve these Bills and instead return them in the interest of the people.

State secretary Suresh Chandra Panigrahy, senior leader Bishnu Mohanty, and members, including Dushmanta Kumar Das, Pushpa Das, and Badri Narayan Dash, led the delegation. Moreover, they argued that the Bills are unjust and anti-people at a time when Odisha faces unemployment, agrarian distress, rising prices, debt burdens, and workers struggling without fair minimum wages.

Furthermore, CPI(M) announced plans to draw the attention of the President of India and the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly while organising statewide protests. The party demanded immediate withdrawal of these Bills, calling them a betrayal of public trust.

The memorandum emphasised that legislators and ministers are not owners of the state but representatives bound by constitutional duty to serve people’s interests. Additionally, CPI(M) criticised the ruling and opposition parties for uniting to pass laws that serve their own interests.

Finally, the party pointed out that the revised salaries and allowances would reach Rs 3,45,000 per month, which they described as a cruel mockery of citizens’ suffering. CPI(M) compared the situation to the repeal of three farm laws under public pressure, arguing that the current Bills should also be scrapped.
