CEC Gyanesh Kumar to lead 35-nation International IDEA in 2026

Newdelhi:26/11/25: In a significant global recognition for India’s electoral leadership, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Shri Gyanesh Kumar is set to assume the Chairship of International IDEA (International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) for the year 2026.

Shri Kumar will formally take over the Chairship on December 3, 2025, during the Council meeting of Member States in Stockholm, Sweden. As Chair, he will preside over all Council meetings throughout 2026.

Founded in 1995, International IDEA is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 35 member countries, along with the United States and Japan as Observers. The organisation works globally to strengthen democratic institutions, promote resilient electoral systems, and support accountable governance.

The Election Commission of India (ECI), regarded as one of the most credible and innovative Election Management Bodies worldwide, has played a key role in IDEA’s work since India became a founding member. India’s consistent contribution to strengthening global electoral processes makes this appointment a notable milestone.

As Chair, Shri Gyanesh Kumar is expected to leverage India’s unparalleled experience in conducting elections involving nearly a billion voters. India has long been recognised for its transparent, technology-enabled, and inclusive electoral framework. The ECI will share its best practices with other election bodies through IDEA’s global platform.

International collaborations through the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) will continue to expand. IIIDEM has already trained more than 3,169 officials from 142 countries, strengthening global preparedness against challenges such as disinformation, electoral violence, and erosion of voter trust.

Under the new leadership, IDEA and ECI will work jointly to promote technological and administrative innovations in elections, benefitting democracies around the world.
