Odisha’s 2nd Regional Plant Resource Centre to Come Up in Keonjhar

Bhubaneswar:14/10/25:In a significant step towards biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held discussions today at Lok Seva Bhawan with officials from the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Department, as well as the Keonjhar district administration, to advance plans for the state’s second Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) in Sanaghagara, Keonjhar.

This ambitious initiative will span approximately 134 acres of verdant land, transforming the area into a vibrant hub for nature enthusiasts, researchers, and tourists. The centre aims to showcase Odisha’s rich floral diversity, with a special emphasis on the state’s diverse orchid species, alongside roses, bamboos, cacti, wild edible fruits, and medicinal plants. Visitors will be immersed in thematic gardens, an orchid conservation and display centre, lotus ponds, fern gardens, and even a flower market, all designed to provide an unforgettable natural experience.

The project is poised to play a multifaceted role: safeguarding biological diversity, serving as a community centre, promoting eco-tourism, and fostering research and education. To ensure year-round accessibility, the Chief Minister advised keeping the facility open to tourists and the public at all times, positioning it as a premier tourism destination. Construction is slated for completion by 2027, with local stone and wood utilised for all furniture and fixtures to emphasise sustainability and regional craftsmanship. Additional amenities will include playgrounds for children, enhancing its appeal as a family-friendly green oasis.

Addressing local challenges, Majhi highlighted the persistent issue of elephant-human conflicts in the region and directed the district administration to implement effective mitigation measures, such as deep trenches to prevent wildlife incursions. He also stressed the importance of maintaining the perennial flow of the nearby Machhkandana River, ensuring that the new development does not disrupt its natural water abundance.

The high-level meeting was attended by key dignitaries, including Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Satyabrata Sahoo, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force Suresh Pant, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Sashwat Mishra, Keonjhar Collector Vishal Singh (via video conference), and Divisional Forest Officer Dhanraj Hanumant Dhamdere.
