Odisha Governor Urges Collective Diabetes Awareness

Bhubaneswar:31/8/25:Diabetes has emerged as a formidable public health challenge in recent times, and collective awareness is essential to tackle this silent killer, said Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati.

Speaking as the chief guest at the 13th Annual Conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), Odisha Chapter, held at the Central Auditorium of SCB Medical College, Cuttack, on Sunday, the Governor emphasized the need for a unified effort to promote a healthy lifestyle and create a culture of health awareness across all sections of society.

Describing diabetes as a silent epidemic, Governor Kambhampati highlighted its far-reaching impact, not only on individuals but also on families, communities, and the economy. He noted that the disease leads to severe complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and neuropathy, necessitating urgent medical attention. Despite advancements in medical technology, including artificial intelligence, digital health solutions, and new treatment methods, prevention remains the most effective strategy. The Governor advocated for balanced nutrition, regular exercise, stress management, and timely health check-ups to significantly reduce the risks associated with diabetes.

He called upon schools, colleges, workplaces, civil society, and the media to take proactive steps in promoting health awareness. Drawing inspiration from India’s success in eradicating polio, the Governor stressed that a similar collective resolve is needed to combat diabetes. He also praised the efforts of the Central and State Governments under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Stroke (NPCDCS) for their initiatives in addressing non-communicable diseases.

Governor Kambhampati urged healthcare providers, researchers, and social organisations to strengthen coordination and collaboration to ensure quality healthcare reaches every corner of Odisha. He expressed hope that the knowledge and insights gained at the conference would be applied meaningfully to bring hope and healing to millions. “With compassion, commitment, and collaboration, we can envision a future where diabetes no longer casts a shadow over our people,” he said, extending his best wishes to all participants and wishing for their dedicated efforts to build a healthier Odisha and a stronger India.

The conference featured addresses by prominent figures, including Dr. CH Vasanth Kumar, Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad; Professor Dr. Siddharth Das, Patron of RSSDI Odisha; Dr. Rakesh Kumar Goenka, Chairman of RSSDI Odisha; and Dr. Suresh Kumar Bansal, Secretary of RSSDI Odisha. Professor Dr. Jayant Kumar Panda, Organising Chairman, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Debarchan Jena, Organising Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. During the event, Professor Dr. Siddharth Das was honoured for his lifetime achievements, and the RSSDI Rural Outreach Programme was launched alongside the unveiling of a commemorative souvenir.
