Odisha CM Visits Kalinga Studio, Directs to Prepare Detailed Project Report to outline the modernisation plan

Bhubaneswar:1/6/25:Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the historic Kalinga Studio in Bhubaneswar today, issuing directives to transform it into a cutting-edge, self-sustaining facility to bolster the Odia film industry.

During his visit, he instructed the concerned department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to outline the modernisation plan, signalling a renewed focus on revitalising this once-iconic hub of Eastern India’s filmmaking.

Established in 1980, Kalinga Studio earned fame as the only advanced film production center in Eastern India, equipped with sophisticated equipment for its time. However, over the decades, a lack of modern technology and infrastructure led to a decline in its prominence. The new government, under CM Majhi’s leadership, has prioritised its revival, aiming to restore its legacy and support the growth of Odia cinema.

In the first phase of development, significant upgrades have already been completed, including the Tech Building, Entrance Plaza, indoor shooting facilities, Kalinga Movie Magic, Avenue Land, Village Area, Iconic Landmark, Snow World, Community Hall, Bamboo Structure, Water Body, and Green Area. These enhancements, overseen by the Industrial Development Corporation of Odisha (IDCO), mark a promising start. CM Majhi has directed departmental officials to expedite the completion of the remaining work to ensure the studio meets contemporary standards.

Speaking during the visit, CM Majhi emphasised the studio’s critical role in advancing Odia cinema. “The development of Kalinga Studio is essential for the growth of the Odia film industry. We will equip it with all modern facilities to make it a self-sustaining studio,” he said. He added that the project would involve consultations with stakeholders in the film industry to ensure a comprehensive and effective transformation.

Accompanying the Chief Minister were Minister of Industries and Skill Development Sampad Charan Swain, Additional Chief Secretary Industries Hemant Sharma, Managing Director of Odisha Film Development Corporation Samarth Verma, and IDCO Managing Director Bhupinder Singh Punia.

ACS Sharma briefed the CM on the progress of the development work, highlighting the collaborative efforts to bring the vision to life.

The modernisation of Kalinga Studio is poised to reestablish Odisha as a key player in India’s cinematic landscape, fostering creativity, employment, and cultural pride. With the government’s commitment and strategic planning, the studio is set to become a beacon for filmmakers, blending tradition with innovation
