Veteran Odia Jatra artist Devi Prasad Rath no more

Paradipgarh:5/11/25:Veteran Odia Jatra artist Devi Prasad Rath, affectionately known as ‘Mama’, died early Wednesday at his residence in Paradipgarh, Jagatsinghpur, following a cardiac arrest.

Rath began his journey as a child artist in stage plays and steadily rose to prominence in Odisha’s performing arts. Over four decades, he performed in more than 100 productions, portraying heroes, villains, and elder characters with remarkable versatility. His final appearance in “Thaki Dela Bandhu Thikana Bele” in 2017 marked the end of a 42-year career that defined an era of Jatra theatre.

Audiences and fellow artistes embraced him as ‘Mama’, a name that reflected his warmth and enduring bond with the theatre community. His performances combined emotional depth and effortless humour, earning him admiration across the state.

As news of his passing spread, hundreds of Jatra artistes, technicians, and fans gathered at his home to pay their last respects. The family placed his body for public viewing, allowing admirers to offer a final farewell to a performer who shaped the cultural identity of Odia folk theatre.

Rath’s legacy continues to inspire younger performers. His dedication and artistic excellence elevated the Jatra tradition, leaving behind a void that resonates deeply within the theatre fraternity.
