Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki will take oath as the head of the interim government

Kathamandu:12/9/25; Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki will take oath as the head of the interim government on Friday, following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli amid youth-led protests, according to Nepal News.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at the President’s residence, Sheetal Niwas, at 8:45 pm (local time), sources in the President’s Office said.

Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, served from July 2016 to June 2017. Known for her rulings on transitional justice and electoral disputes, she began practising law in 1979, was designated senior advocate in 2007, and appointed as a Supreme Court Justice in 2009. Protest leaders from the country’s Gen-Z movement supported her appointment, citing her neutrality and credibility.

Nepal’s parliament has been dissolved following widespread protests against corruption and political instability. While the dissolution was one of the demands raised by demonstrators, political parties and civil society groups have called for adherence to constitutional procedures.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairperson of the National Assembly expressed condolences over the loss of lives during the protests and appealed for medical support to the injured. They also condemned the violence and arson incidents in Baneshwor, Singha Durbar, and other areas, which caused damage to government offices, media houses, commercial establishments, and historical records.

The statement said the President is working to find a constitutional way forward while upholding sovereignty, civil liberties, national unity, and the rule of law.
