Ratha Katha Anukula Marks the Start of Chariot Construction for the Grand Festiva

Puri:6/4/25:The annual Puri Rath Yatra preparations are underway, with the traditional Ratha Katha Anukula, or ceremonial wood-cutting ceremony, marking the auspicious start of the elaborate chariot construction process.

This sacred ritual, performed with reverence, signifies the spiritual and cultural essence of the festival, dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

During the ceremony, specific wood types, such as Dhaura and Ashan, are meticulously chosen and consecrated as they will be used to craft the three majestic chariots. Traditional carpenters, known as Maharana servitors, lead this intricate task, following age-old techniques and practices. These chariots, constructed anew every year, symbolize the deities’ divine journey during the festival.

The Rath Yatra is one of the most awaited and celebrated events in Odisha, drawing millions of devotees and tourists from across the world. The festival’s preparations reflect the spirit of devotion and the rich heritage of the region.
