Union Agriculture Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar addresses the Pre-Summit of United Nations Food Systems Summit 2021

Newdelhi:28/7/21:Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar virtually delivered the Ministerial Statement in the Pre-Summit of United Nations Food System Summit 2021 today. In the statement, the Minister emphasized the importance of Agriculture in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 as 12 out of 17 SDGs are directly dependent on agriculture. He said that agriculture plays an important role in the socio-economic transformation of developing countries. In this regard, hementioned the journey of Indian agriculture from a state of food shortages to that of a food grain exporter through Green, White and Blue revolutions. The Minister said India’s public distribution system and price support system for farmers is unique in the world.

The Minister reiterated the focus of the Government of India on small and marginal farmers and listed various steps taken by the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi towards making farming profitable for farmers; increasing their incomes and development of post-harvest infrastructure in the rural areas. In this regard, the Minister listed the creation of Agriculture Infrastructure Fund with a corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore, formation of 10000 Farmer Producer Organizations, the PM KISAN Scheme through which an amount of 1.37 lakh crore has been credited to the bank accounts of 11 crore farmers.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar led a fifteen members’ Indian delegation to the three-day UN Food Systems Pre-Summit 2021organized by the United Nations and the Government of Italy. In view of the Covid-19 pandemic the pre-summit is being organized in a hybrid mode. The Indian delegation, apart from Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, comprised of the Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Sushree Shobha Karandlaje, Prof. Ramesh Chand, Member NITI Ayog, Dr AbhilakshLikhi, Additional Secretary; Dr. Neena Malhotra, Ambassador of India to Italy and officers from Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, Women & Child Development; Fisheries, Agriculture Research and Education, Food & Public Distributionand Education.

UN Secretary-General Shri António Guterres, Prime Minister of Italy Shri Mario Draghi along with representatives of various countries, also addressed the three-day summit.
