Bhubaneswar:18/4/19: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced Rs 30 lakh ex-gratia compensation to the next kin of a woman polling officer who was gunned down yesterday by suspected Maoists while doing election duty in Kandhamal district.
The shootout had occurred in Phulbani Assembly segment under Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat yesterday where polling is taking place today.
Rs 30 lakh ex-gratia is being disbursed towards the legal heir of the deceased polling officer Sanjukta Diggal. The disbursal is being made in accordance with guidelines. As per election commission rules, officials who die of unnatural death while on poll duty are entitled to Rs 30 lakh compensation, said Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar.
Sector Officer Sanjukta Digal was shot dead when she got down from the vehicle to check a suspicious object lying on the road while passing through a jungle. Other polling personnel were in the vehicle and were unhurt.
