Senior BJD leader & Ex-Minister Raghunath Mohanty joined BJP

Bhubaneswar:2/4/19: Senior leader Raghunath Mohanty, who resigned from the BJD on Sunday, today joined BJP in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The veteran leader had accused the BJD of having deviated from the ideals of legendary leader Biju Patnaik. Mohanty was vice-president of the ruling BJD.

Mohnaty is likely to contest from his home turf of Basta Assembly seat in Balasore district on a BJP ticket.

Union Minister Pradhan welcomed Mohanty to party fold and said the veteran leader’s joining in BJP will certainly strengthen it.

Mohanty had to resign from the Naveen Patnaik Ministry and later was suspended from the BJD in March 2013 after he was arrested in a dowry torture case slapped against him by his daughter-in-law. He was denied a party ticket in the 2014 Assembly elections.

He had represented Basata Assembly constituency for five consecutive terms since 1990. Mohanty had served as Minister in various departments in the Naveen Patnaik Government.
