Odisha-born Satya S Tripathi has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the UNEP

New York:28/8/18: Odisha-born development and environment expert Satya S Tripathi has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Tuesday.

Tripathi, who will succeed Elliot Harris of Trinidad and Tobago, has served as Senior Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development at UNEP since 2017.

The appointment was made on Monday by Secretary-General Anonio Guterras. Tripathi is now the third Indian at the senior levels of the UN hierarchy.

Born in Odisha, Tripathi holds honours, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in commerce, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law from Berhampur University.

He is a development economist and a lawyer with over 35 years of experience, and has worked for the United Nations since 1998 in Europe, Asia and Africa on strategic assignments in sustainable development, human rights, democratic governance and legal affairs, said spokesman for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric.

He has also served as the Chair of the Committees on Laws and Treaties for the United Nations-mediated Cyprus unification talks in 2004.

Before that he was a Senior Distinguished Fellow on Natural Resources Governance with the World Agroforestry Centre and on the World Economic Forum’s Global Advisory Council on Forests.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is an agency of United Nations and coordinates its environmental activities, assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices.

UN Environment activities cover a wide range of issues regarding the atmosphere, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, environmental governance and green economy.

It has played a significant role in developing international environmental conventions, promoting environmental science and information and illustrating the way those can be implemented in conjunction with policy, working on the development and implementation of policy with national governments, regional institutions in conjunction with environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

UN Environment has also been active in funding and implementing environment related development projects.
