New Delhi, 21 December 2017. Sahitya Akademi announced its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards in 24 languages today. Seven books of novel, five of poetry, five of short stories, five of literary criticism and one of play and essays have won the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2017.
The Awards were recommended by distinguished Jury members representing 24 Indian languages and approved by the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi which met today under the Chairmanship of Prof. Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari, President, Sahitya Akademi.
Those who have won the Awards for their collection of poetry include Sri Udaya Narayana Singh ‘Nachiketa’ (Maithili), Sri Shrikant Deshmukh (Marathi), Sri Bhujanga Tudu (Santali), (Late) Sri Inqulab (Tamil) and Sri Devipriya (Telugu). Sri Jayanta Madhab Bora (Assamese), Sri Afsar Ahmed (Bengali), Ms. Rita Boro (Bodo), Ms. Mamang Dai (English), Sri K.P. Ramanunni (Malayalam), Sri Niranjan Mishra (Sanskrit) .and Sri Nachhattar (Punjabi) are awarded for their’ novel.
Those who have won the Awards for their collection of short stories include Sri Shiv Mehta (Doqri), Sri Autar Krishen Rahbar (Kashmiri), Sri Gajanan Jog (Konkani), Ms. Gayatri Saraf (Odia) and Sri Baig Ehsas (Urdu). Ms. Urmi Ghanshyam Desai (Gujarati), Sri Ramesh Kuntal Megh (Hindi), Sri T.P. Ashoka (Kannada), Ms. Bina Hangkhim (Nepali) and Sri Neeraj Daiya (Rajasthani) have won for their works on literary criticism. Sri Rajen Toijamba (Manipuri) and Sri Jagdish Lachhani (Sindhi) has been awarded for play and essays respectively.
The books were selected on the basis of recommendations made by a Jury of three members in the concerned languages in accordance with the procedure laid down for the purpose. According to the procedure, the Executive Board declared the Awards on the basis of unanimous selections made by the Jurors or selection made on the basis of majority vote. The Awards relate to books first published during the five years immediately preceding the year of Award (i.e. between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2015).The Award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl and a cheque of Rs. 1,00,0001- will be presented to the authors of these books at a special function to be held on 12 February 2018 at New Delhi during the Festival of Letters organized by Sahitya Akademi.
