Vehicular traffic was paralyzed today for six hours National Highway no-20 near Banajodi

Keonjhar:11/12/17; Vehicular traffic was paralyzed today for six hours as locals protesting against what they said ‘arbitrary toll collection’ blocked the National Highway no-20 near Banajodi, about 7 Km from the district headquarters township.

Thousands of vehicles were left stranded on the busy highway as protesters blocked the highway.

The NHAI guidelines specify that the distance between two cess collection plazas should not be more than 70 KM. But the concerned authorities have come up with two gates within a distance of 45 KM. Vehicle owners mostly from Keonjhar region are bearing the brunt of this double taxation policy. It reminds one of the Jizya taxation of medieval period, observed the protesters.

The agitation was peaceful and was incident-free. The highway blockade was later withdrawn at about 5.30 PM today with administration assuring the suspension of cess collection on the highway, said Sriharsha Mishra, Sub Divisional Police Officer
