Tanka Torani and Rabidi were banned in Jagannath temple.

Puri:9/9/17: In a bid to bring in quality reforms in the preparation and sale of Mahaprasad after detection of sub-standard quality of rice at Puri’s Lord Jagannath temple, the temple administration has prohibited sale of Tanka Torani (a refreshment drink prepared by mixing curd, water, lemon juice, lemon leaves, salt, green chillies) and Rabidi, an Indian dessert made with reduced milk.

While the ban has been imposed with effect from September 8, the SJTA also restricted selling of Mahaprasad on road and within the premises of the 12th century shrine. Taking a strong action against child labour, the temple administration has directed non-engagement of minors in the selling of Mahaprasad, the notification read.

As per the notice, entry of youths who help Suara servitors for selling Abadha (Mahaprasad) at Ananda Bazar was also banned.  The entries of persons who demand money from devotees have also been prohibited from the premises of Ananda Bazar.

Meanwhile, a special squad has been formed to keep a close watch over the implementation of the above prohibitory orders and to conduct raid at the Mahaprasad selling market regularly.

However, the servitors are quite disappointed over SJTA’s new rule. Worth mentioning, there is no such rule in the temple for selling of Tanka Torani and Rabidi at Ananda Bazar as the two dishes have no justifiable connection with Mahaprasad of the Jagannath temple.
