TR Zeliang as the next CM Nagaland

Guwahati:19/7/17: In a dramatic turn of events, Nagaland Governor PB Acharya today dismissed the state’s chief minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu and appointed TR Zeliang, who was leading a group of dissident Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLAs, as the next CM.

Zeliang will take oath at 3 pm today, Acharya told the New Indian Express. He said that he had directed Zeliang to prove his majority by July 22.

“He (Shurhozelie Liezietsu) was dismissed and after that, Zeliang was appointed as the CM. Today (Wednesday), he (Liezietsu) was to take the confidence vote but he did not turn up. Accordingly, he was dismissed,” Acharya said.

The development came even as Liezietsu filed a petition in a Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court challenging the dismissal of his writ petition by the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court.

The court had on Tuesday ruled that there was no merit in Liezietsu’s petition and dismissed it. Subsequently, it vacated its July 14 interim order staying the floor test till July 17. The court had left the issue to the “wisdom of the governor to take a decision on the same after proper application of mind”.
