Bhubaneswar19/87/17:: A day after the special Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh requesting to declare the Paika Rebellion (1817) as the first war of Independence.
The State Cabinet meeting presided over by the chief minister decided to propose the Centre to declare the Paika Rebellion as the first war of Independence as the mutiny had taken place 40 years before Sepoy Mutiny (1857).
Seeking appreciation for the Paikas glory and courage against the British Colonialism, Naveen mentioned that this step by the Union Government would be a befitting tribute to commemorate the 200th bi-centenary of the Paika Rebellion.
He even requested the Union Minister to consider the proposal positively so that the people of India appreciate the events that led the Indian freedom struggle against the foreign rule.
