Triple talaq practice matter examine shall beginning from May 11

New Delhi:30/3/17; The practice of Muslim men to divorce their wives by saying talaq thrice- is a crucial and a five-member Constitution Bench comprising Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud will sit during the summer vacation to examine the matter beginning from May 11, said the Supreme Court today.

The apex court had earlier made it clear that it is not debating the important issue of Uniform Civil Code (UCC). However, the petitioners had told the apex court that is a sensitive issue and the court should hear it.

Several women have filed petitions before the Supreme Court seeking abolishment of the triple talaq practice.

On the other hand, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has defended the practice by saying it is better to divorce a woman than killing her. It also said, the rights bestowed by religion can’t be questioned in a court of law. It also claimed that any order against Triple Talaq would be an infringement on their right to follow and profess any religion.
